When I tell you I have devoted YEARS of my life to looking at floor plans, I’m not joking. I took an interior design class in high school where my love for floor plans started. Then, I took a year of interior design in college before leaving to start my own business and career path. Now I’ve been looking at floor plans for my own build for literally years.
Trying to Find the Perfect Floor Plan
I’ve shopped around locally, looking at homes being built and floor plans builders have pre-made on their websites. I’ve scoured the depths of the Architectural Designs website hoping to find the right floor plan, as well as a couple similar sites.
And nothing.
NOTHING was right. Now I know there is apparently no such thing a completely perfect home, but I can’t settle.
Because of this, I decided to design my own floor plans. The option of being able to put my own heart and soul into the design of my home lit me up and I couldn’t shake the feeling.
Weighing the Costs
I knew from hearing other people’s experience that it would cost more time and money to design a custom home rather than just buying a pre-existing home or building a spec home, but it’s so worth it to me. We would have ended up spending just as much money, if not more, on remodeling a home we didn’t love from the beginning.
I’ve always said I want to leave my mark on this world, leave my footprint everywhereI go, and leave a legacy for my family. What better way than with a custom built home?
The entire idea completely scared me in the beginning. What if I couldn’t follow through? What if the cost was way more than I budgeted for? Was I in over my head? Would Brandon even be down for this? (Spoiler alert, he definitely wasn’t down at first.)
I decided to do it anyway.
If you’re like me and you just can’t shake the idea that your dream home plan doesn’t exist YET but you know it CAN, then you might want to consider designing your own floor plans too!
Getting An Architect
Of course you can draw the general shape of the rooms you want and the general layout, but the only way to get your work to come to life is to work with a licensed professional.

Work with an architect who is just as excited about your project as you are. After all, this isn’t just a fun hobby drawing you’re creating, it’s your future HOME. Whatever you draw will eventually be an actual structure that you’ll be living in, so make it count.
We are still in the VERY early stages of building – planning and gathering as much information as possible. We are now searching for an architect, or a builder who has one on their team.
If you have read to this point, thank you! I will be sharing all of my thoughts, research, and experience with building a home in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
