With the recent rise in all white and neutral color palettes, it can be easy for a space to start to feel a bit cold, sterile, and not so welcoming. Cozy spaces are also a really big trend in 2021. With everyone staying home more, it only makes sense to want to have a warm, cozy, inviting feeling to your space.
Here is my list of fun and easy ways to add some texture to your home that work perfectly with the current home trends. Even better, these tips are all kid and pet friendly!

Hanging plants

Having plants in the home is on the rise, and as someone with the complete opposite of a green thumb I’ve been slow to hop on the plant train. However, I will say I’m very interested in the look and feel they give to a room. If you can swing it, add some plants to your space in hanging planters so kids and pets can’t reach them. The plants themselves will add texture, but if you’d like to take it up a notch you can use a fun, textured planter, basket, or an added macrame piece!
This Amazing Terra-Cotta Pizza Oven

I had to throw this one in. I can’t quit thinking about this pizza oven so I had to include it somewhere! This pizza oven has the potential to be the focal point of any kitchen, whether your style is modern, Scandinavian, farmhouse, or boho chic. Having a unique textured piece like this gives warmth, a pop of color, and some added functionality to your cooking space. Perfect for weekend dinners, cozy stay-at-home date nights, and entertaining company (when that’s a thing again.)
Welcome Mat or Washable Rug
These pieces were made with mess in mind. They’re made to withstand dirt and spills so you don’t have to worry about wasting your money on something that could get ruined. The only problem I’ve had with rugs is my cat thinking she needs to claw at the fibers, or my puppies chewing at it. If that’s something you have going on as well, a welcome mat outside of your front door or washable run on your patio might be the best option.
Wall Art

Not only do pictures add a fun element and depth to a space, but hanging things like cloth or woven hangings, plants, branches, and 3D objects can add so much variety, personality, and warmth to a space. No matter what your decor style is, there are art pieces out there for everyone to use to their advantage. I’ve curated some of my favorite wall art pieces here for you to check out!
Cordless Shades

Out with the old corded blinds, and in with the new cordless! It’s much safer for little ones, and there aren’t any pieces hanging down that pets could chew on or use to pull own the entire set of blinds. You can find many designs, colors and textures of these shades. Some are even automatic and will rise or fall with the push of a button!
Baskets
This one is my favorite. I love the look of natural fibers, and I love seeing a cute basket instead of a mess of toys and things laying around. I use baskets as storage in our playroom, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. They’re a simple way to add texture, warmth, and organization to a space.I have some wire baskets as well that work well with either farmhouse or modern styles. My only tip for wire baskets is DO NOT put them near a walkway or somewhere where you might catch your toe on them. Thank me later.
Round Ottoman or Coffee Table
Round coffee tables and ottomans are sleek, chic, and (in my opinion) so unique. Most of the people I know have rectangle or square ottomans and coffee tables, myself currently included. I love the look of a round table and I love that I don’t have to worry about any little ones catching a corner, or myself catching a corner, because I do that often. The fabric on an ottoman adds texture, while a possible woodgrain, marble, or other pattern on a table will add the same effect.
Throw Blankets
Probably the easiest, and my favorite, way to texturize a space is by adding a throw blanket . You can never have too many blankets, especially in a bedroom, nursery, family room, or main living room. I live in indiana, and I’m always wrapped up in a blanket at home during fall and winter. And summer and spring, who am I kidding. A nice, neutral color throw is a subtle way to warm pu a space while a bright, colorful throw is a great way to add an accent piece to a room without breaking the bank. The good thing about blankets is, if you get a solid color or a subtle pattern they can transition between decor styles. You can always take them with you through your changing tastes.
Drawer pulls

I love fun drawer pulls. Ones made out of crystals and shaped agate pieces are my absolute favorite. They can add a fun pop of color to a dresser, or a sleek touch of texture to an entertainment system or console table drawer. Wherever you put them, they upgrade the piece of furniture they live on, as well as add a subtle, unique touch of texture.
Table Runners or Placemats
This one is a little iffy with little ones if kept out all the time, but if you only set your table for special occasions it’s perfect. Mixing multiple cloths, fibers, and colors in one setting can add depth and personality to a cold, plain dining table. Dress that space up and add that warm, welcoming touch for a super low price. Placemats are a great way to add some warmth and texture to your table setting.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these tips and received a spark of inspiration for your own space! Let me know if you try any of these out, or if you have any other favorite ways to add texture to your space through home decor.
